Powered by the sun

Charge your EV

Not long after landing here Andrew met Mike Casey - “the electric orchard guy” - and we were bitten by his enthusiasm for solar power in this sunshine-heavy state as well as his mission with Rewiring Aotearoa.

Kaihanu Lodge’s roofs are now dressed with solar panels feeding three batteries and two inverters. And Central Otago’s baking summer days power us for months on end.

It didn’t take us long to switch to an EV ute (yes, you read that right!). So we’re all set with an EV charger (Level 2) for your use too.

Need to charge your ebikes? You’re welcome to plug in your own charger and power up with the sun!

The snazzy Tesla tech tells us if we have a power outage and that we’ve been switched to battery power, automatically. The internet and the water pump keep on running regardless. When a storm is brewing, the batteries are automatically filled up for us, just in case power lines are affected.

Sustainable stays

Enjoy your stay knowing it has minimal impact on the environment.

Additionally, we economise for the sake of our planet wherever we can:

  • environmentally friendly cleaning products & detergents

  • refillable toiletry bottles & pumps

  • composting food waste (or feeding it to our chickens)

  • chemical-free homegrown fruit & vegetables

  • water sourced from our own bore (then triple filtered)

  • air-dried linens (your towels might not be hotel-fluffy)
